Under it children played catch

From the sun it supplied a shroud.

One day a child sat upon the ground

lying under the trees large eaves.

From where the tree stood it found

it could tickle the child with soft leaves.

The child laughed, looking up with love,

And the tree shook with all its might.

The leaves fell from high above

and the child smiled at the sight.

After a while the child went away

The tree again stood all alone

Left again in the wind to sway

from the spot where it had grown.

The next day the child came back

And the tree looked at what he had

for the child carried in his hand a sack

but as it happened, it wasn’t bad.

From the sack the child pulled a spade

and, reaching in deeper, a bag of seed

he then sat by the tree, by the shade

and began to dig a whole with great speed.

When the hole was dug the seed went in

and as the tree watched it knew what he did,

the child was trying to grow him some kin.

The tree shook and shivered, what a wonderful kid!

In time that moves so quickly for a tree

it would have a buddy to call its own.

Soon it would be that the tree would see

the wonderful plant that that boy had sown.
